Petworth Park Walk

Enjoy a 5km circular trail near Petworth, West Sussex. Generally considered an easy route, it takes an average of 1 – 1.5hrs. Dogs are welcome and may be off-lead in some areas. Enjoy winding through the park, taking in the scenic paths, and watching the deer. Along the way you will also pass the ponds where there may be birds. While dogs are permitted, they need to be kept under close control, particularly near the deer where it is best to keep more lively dogs on lead.

DATES OF THIS WALK INCLUDED TUESDAY 3RD JUNE

The Sheepdowns and Byworth Walk

We will head over to the Sheepdowns where we will head down some steep steps and up over the Sheepdowns where we may encounter horses enroute. Approx. a 2.95 mile route.

We will then venture up through a wooded part before heading over through some higher grassed areas on the pathway which will take us across a main road down into another field which again may have horses in (so possibly not a walk with dogs if they are uncomfortable with horses) where we walk into Byworth and make our way down to a stream and back up into Petworth before heading back to the start.

There are some inclines and declines on this route and although this is on pathways sometimes there is a section that can be a little overgrown at times so please be aware of this. Lots of beautiful views of the downs, over Petworth and beyond can be seen on this route.

Welldiggers & Hesworth Common Circular

A circular walk from The Welldiggers Arms on the outskirts of Petworth in West Sussex. The walking route explores local stretches of woodland and commons, we will visit a pretty church and stunning viewpoint along the way, following peaceful paths that provide a true feeling of escape.

The woodland commons are open access with lots of intersecting paths. The walk includes several climbs and descents throughout, including a couple of short but steep sections.

Several stretches (particularly the bridleway at the beginning and end) can be very muddy after periods of rain and in winter, so good boots are a must, and wellingtons are recommended at wetter times of year. You will need to negotiate several kissing gates and staggered barriers plus one stile (which has a large gap alongside for dogs).

There is no livestock on the route, just the outside chance of sharing one field with a horse, but it’s still a good idea to bring a lead for your dog. There are three road crossings that need care, but these are either within speed restriction areas or have excellent visibility. This route is approx. 9km and will take about 3 hours. There will be an option to stop at Fittleworth Village stores halfway around for refreshments and toilets.
